Did you know that in the wild, hedgehogs can travel up to 2 miles in a single night? Your cage needs to accommodate that roaming instinct to prevent obesity and depression.
First things first: Ditch the wire wheel. Wire mesh wheels are notorious for breaking little toes and causing bumblefoot. Always opt for a solid-surface wheel (like a Carolina Storm Wheel) that is easy to clean.
Secondly, add “clutter.” Hedgehogs are not minimalist—they love tunnels, PVC pipes, crinkle balls, and dig boxes. A busy hedgehog is a happy hedgehog. Boredom leads to overeating and lethargy, so change up their toy layout weekly to keep their minds sharp!
