If you think a bowl of dry cat food is all your hedgehog needs, think again! While high-quality cat kibble is a fantastic staple, the diet of a hedgehog requires careful balance.
In the wild, these little foragers feast primarily on insects, which means they need a high-protein, low-fat diet to stay lean and active. A common pitfall we see in our consultation calls is overfeeding “treats” like mealworms and waxworms. While your hedgehog will do a happy dance for them, these insects are high in fat and phosphorus. Think of them like cake—great for bonding, but not a daily meal.
Our Golden Rule: Look for kibble with at least 30% protein and less than 15% fat. Supplement with gut-loaded crickets or black soldier fly larvae for variety and mental stimulation.
