Does your hedgehog curl into a tight ball and hiss every time you reach into their cage? Take a deep breath—this is perfectly normal! Hedgehogs are prey animals, and their first instinct is defense. But with patience, you can turn that scared spike-ball into a cuddly companion.
Here is our signature “T-Shirt Trick”:
Take a soft, worn t-shirt and sleep with it for a night to saturate it with your scent. Place it in their cage as a blanket. This helps your hedgehog associate your smell with “home” and “safety.” Additionally, try handling them during their active hours (evening) rather than interrupting their daytime beauty sleep. Let them come to you!
Bonding isn’t a race; it’s a marathon. The reward of a hedgehog that uncurls and falls asleep in your hands is worth every minute of effort.
