Be a Health Detective: Signs Your Hedgehog is Sick

Hedgehogs are masters of disguise. In the wild, showing weakness gets you eaten, so they hide their symptoms until they are very sick. As a responsible owner, you need to be a detective.

Watch out for these three critical “Red Flags”:

  1. Green or Runny Stool: While stress can cause temporary changes, persistent diarrhea is a sign of parasites or dietary issues.
  2. Hedgehog “Wobble”: Any loss of coordination, weakness in the back legs, or stumbling is an emergency. This can be a sign of Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome (WHS) or a severe infection.
  3. Excessive Dry Skin/Quill Loss: A little quilling is normal, but if you see flaky, crusty skin around the ears and face, suspect mites or fungal infections.

When in doubt, call an exotic vet immediately. Early intervention saves lives.
